About the European Orthodontic Society

The European Orthodontic Society is a registered charitable organisation, and a company limited by guarantee. The Society’s key aims are to advance all aspects of orthodontics and its relations with the collateral arts and sciences for the public benefit, and seek the furtherance of orthodontics amongst all branches of the dental profession working in the public and private sectors, hospitals and universities throughout Europe.

The Society is affiliated to the World Federation of Orthodontists and has close co-operation with the European Federation of Orthodontic Specialists Association. The Society also has a close relationship with the Network of Erasmus Based European Orthodontic Postgraduate Programmes.

The Society offers a wide number of benefits to members. These benefits include subscription to the EJO, ability to participate in the EBO examinations as well as discounted event and annual congress  registration.

About the European Journal of Orthodontics

The European Journal of Orthodontics (EJO) is one of the leading periodicals in its field. It provides a forum for orthodontists and researchers engaged in orthodontic research in Europe and all other parts of the world.

Clinical papers cover all aspects of clinical care, including treatment techniques as well as different approaches to diagnosis and treatment planning. Research papers are of direct relevance to the clinician and extend the scientific basis of orthodontics.

The European Journal of Orthodontics was established in 1979 and is the official journal of the European Orthodontic Society. Prior to 1979, the Society published annually its transactions. These contained reports of papers that had been presented during the Society’s annual congress. The EJO has become a journal of high international repute that contains peer-reviewed scientific articles. The journal is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Main Functions

The Editor is the academic lead of the European Journal of Orthodontics and is responsible for the efficient, erudite and ethical running of the Journal. The Editor is expected to work closely with the publisher and is closely involved in manuscript handling throughout the publication process, from submission to production. The Editor reports to Council of the European Orthodontic Society, and together with the treasurer, they are accountable for securing financial viability of the journal.

The Editor is the public face, representative and main spokesperson for the EJO helping to ensure that it continues to be seen as a leading journal for orthodontics and that it fulfils its own aims as well as those of the Society.

Please note the descriptions below relate to the role as currently performed. However, the Society is open to discussion with the right candidate about alternative ways of carrying it out.

Roles and Responsibilities

Editorial:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day running of the EJO, including manuscript submission, handling, production and publication.
  • Give final decisions on whether to accept or reject for all submissions.
  • Act as final arbiter and decision-maker in the case of editorial disagreements.
  • Be available to offer advice and expertise to the publisher, editorial assistant (publisher) and production team.
  • Respond to authors’ and readers’ queries as needed.
  • Together with the EOS, appoint Associate Editors and an Editorial Board in accordance with EOS regulations.
  • Chair an annual editorial board meeting.
  • Publish and annual report.

  • Safeguard the good name and values of the EJO and of the Society.
  • To support recruitment to any EJO-related staff or voluntary post which may from time to time be required.
  • Organise, annually, the best publication award in the EJO (Beni Solow Award)
  • Promote the EJO.
  • To support any review of the publishing contract which may from time to time be required.
  • The Editor will work with the Congress Organiser of the European Orthodontic Society and its scientific committee to edit and organise the publication of the scientific presentations given at the congress.

Time commitment

As required.

The Editor is invited to attend the Spring Council meeting of the EOS Council, which currently takes place in February each year.

The Editor is expected to provide a report of the journal’s activities to the EOS membership at its annual business meeting.

Location

The role can be performed from anywhere within the geographical bounds of Europe. Spring Council meetings take place in London or in the location of the next Congress. In-person attendance is preferred but online attendance is acceptable.

Term

There will be an initial probation period of one year, but the contract is a fixed term role of altogether seven years, reviewed annually. It may be renewed once for a further 7 years. The current Editor has kindly agreed to help in the initial phase to guarantee a smooth handover.

Remuneration

The Society will pay the Editor an annual salary, based on a pro-rata working of 2 sessions a week.

The salary is payable in monthly instalments on the first day of the month on commencement of the appointment.

If outside the UK, the Editor will be responsible for paying any tax and national insurance on the fees paid to them in their resident Country as a self-employed individual.

An annual allowance of (subject to production of receipts) will be available to cover the editor’s attendance at the annual congress and any additional expenditure incurred as Editor, including the registration of any speakers invited to the EJO open session.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be an academic orthodontist of high international standing.
  • Be a specialist orthodontist with a degree/diploma from a respected academic institution.
  • Have and excellent publishing record.
  • Have experience in academic medical scientific publishing, preferably within the dental/orthodontic field. It is preferred that the Editor has a good track record as an editor-in-chief or associate editor in a relevant academic journal.
  • Be conscientious and detail-oriented.
  • Be able to analyse and correct written English to ensure clarity and accuracy.
  • Be willing to devote the necessary time and effort.
  • Be committed to the mission of the Society.
  • Understand the dynamics and imperatives of a professional membership body.

The Editor must be a member of the EOS. Applicants must therefore be eligible for membership of the EOS and if they are not already a member, are expected to join at the time of appointment and to maintain their membership throughout their tenure.
