Chances and Opportunities in Lingual Orthodontics
Abstract
Few treatment modalities in orthodontics have evolved as significantly over recent years and decades as Lingual Orthodontics (LO). Many of the often highly subjective statements made by colleagues whose experience with lingual appliances dates back 20 years or more no longer apply to the current situation. Critical discussion points such as patient comfort, bracket loss, finishing, and general clinical handling have lost much of their former relevance over time and can now largely be regarded as “problems solved”. The extensive individualisation of modern lingual appliances, both in treatment planning and in the manufacturing process itself, has opened up new possibilities not only for LO but for orthodontics as a whole.
Learning objectives:
- Understand the reasons why LO offers opportunities and advantages for the orthodontic specialist
- Realise that LO differs in certain respects and requires additional effort to learn how to use it efficiently
- Understand some of the most typical lingual procedures in the clinical setting
- Discuss the differences between fixed and removable orthodontic treatment using more or less aesthetic appliances
